MILILANI — A powerful 'Aiea baseball team put a grinding halt to Roosevelt's surprising run through the O'ahu Interscholastic Association tournament yesterday, winning 10-0 and capturing its first league championship since 1994.

Na Ali'i (12-1) banged out 10 hits and pitcher Blake Lamug allowed just three hits and struck out five in the title game at Mililani High School which was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule.

'Aiea, a program that produced University of Hawai'i greats Derek Tatsuno, Gerald Ako and Randy Oyama, has won seven OIA crowns and was one of the favorites entering this year. But this promising season was cast in doubt early on when five senior starters were suspended the opening week after breaking team rules on a preseason trip to a Neighbor Island.

Na Ali'i lost their OIA Western Division opener to Leilehua, 6-5, but have won 12 straight since.

"It was a very bad decision on my part and my teammates' part, but the other guys on the team never lost hope in us and I thank them for that," said center fielder Dylan Libadisos, who was suspended that week but went 2 for 2 with three RBIs yesterday. "We had some turmoil early, but the kids on this team are a family and we all stuck together."

'Aiea looked every bit a dominant unit yesterday, scoring one run in the first inning, two in the second, four in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth, when Libadisos lined a one-hopper with two outs that skipped over the right fielder's head to score the final runs.

All but one Na Ali'i starter got a hit and Lamug walked none, did not allow a runner past second base and was supported by an errorless defense that turned two double plays.

"That's a powerful team," Roosevelt coach Kerry Higa said. "Their pitcher did a great job, and they hit the ball hard."

The Rough Riders (10-4) were the tournament's surprise team, entering as the East's No. 4 seed but knocking off West powers Mililani, Leilehua and Pearl City in consecutive days. Roosevelt starter Justin Goo made his third appearance in four days yesterday.

"That's just guts, and leaving everything on the field," 'Aiea coach Ryan Kato said of Goo. "My hat goes off to Roosevelt; that's a scrappy team."

Libadisos said Na Ali'i took nothing for granted, even while ahead 8-0 in the final inning.

"We go into every game like it's the championship game, so this one was no different," he said. "There's always upsets, so we never take anyone lightly. We wanted to get those last two runs to seal it because especially in the playoffs, nothing is safe, as we saw in Kailua last year. They won all three (OIA tournament) games in the last inning."

Kailua's final one-run league victory last year came against 'Aiea in the championship game, a fact that weighed heavily on Na Ali'i's minds the past 12 months.

"Last year we sat in this dugout and watched Kailua celebrate, and from that day on we knew what we wanted to do this year," Kato said. "Our mission started that day, and after (the suspensions) there was some soul-searching but the kids realized that if we wanted to reach our goal, things had to change. They realized the game is bigger than themselves, and they stopped complaining about running, about taking ground balls. "
