UH ends softball season with a win

Tracie Uchima hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to lift the University of Hawai'i to a 3-1 victory over host San Jose State and a split of a season-ending doubleheader yesterday at SJSU Field.

San Jose State won the first game, 5-1.

Hawai'i finished 28-33, 10-14 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Spartans were 16-33 and 9-11.

In the second game, Melissa Coogan replaced starter Shannon Tabion and pitched three innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory. She struck out three, walked none and didn't allow a hit.

Monique Kelly hit an RBI double to tie the game at 1 in the fourth inning after Hawai'i scored an unearned run in the top of the inning.

In the first game, San Jose State pitcher Kelli McColliser allowed seven hits and one unearned run in a complete-game performance. She walked four and struck out four.

Hawai'i senior April Crowell closed out her career with two hits in each game yesterday.



GOLF

• Odelius tied for 25th: University of Hawai'i golfer Sara Odelius shot a 6-over 78 and finished tied for 25th at the NCAA Division I Women's West Regional yesterday at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.

Odelius, who finished at 8-over 224, was UH's sole entry in the tournament. She did not qualify for the national tournament. UCLA's Hannah Jun won medalist honors shooting a 71 and finishing at 7-under 209. UCLA shot a 3-under 861 to win the team title. The top eight teams advanced to the nationals.

No golfers from Hawai'i playing in the West Regional earned spots either in the individual or team competition of the national tournament.

• Mathias leads at Hickam Invitational: Jonathan Mathias shot a second-round 4-under-par 68 yesterday to take the second-round lead in the Hickam Invitational at the Mamala Bay Golf Course.

Brandan Kop (70 yesterday) is a shot behind at 141. Defending champion Mark Chun (73) and Ryan Perez (72) are at 144.

Merv Matsumoto (73) leads the senior flight at 146 and Wendell Kop (73) the super senior flight at 144.

The tournament concludes today.

• Kim, Yao finish sixth: Hawai'i's Bev Kim and Lily Yao finished sixth in the First Flight at the Senior Women's International 4-Ball. The Women's Trans-National Golf Association event ended Friday at Indian Wells (Calif.) Golf Resort.

Kim, a member of the Hawai'i Golf Hall of Fame, and Yao, a former state senior champion, shot 76-77-74 for a 227 total. Lynn Larson and Mary Smith won the flight at 221. Former Hawai'i resident — and Punahou golf coach — Lynne (Winn) Jones tied for third with her partner, at 223.

MEETING

• Quarterback Club: University of Hawai'i golfer Matt Kodama and Kalaheo track athlete Jessika Ngirblekuu will be honored as the club's Sportspersons of the Month for April at tomorrow's meeting.

The club's luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and meeting at noon at Pagoda Ballroom.

Speakers include Lois Manin, UH media relations director; Cindy Luis, Honolulu Star-Bulletin sports writer; Liz Chun, KGMB sports director and Kristie Yamamoto, the Kaiser High School boys tennis coach.
