Kaua'i learning center proposed

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is considering establishing an environmental education center on state land adjacent to the Wailua Reservoir on Kaua'i.

A public meeting to review the proposal and solicit ideas from the public is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. May 18 at the Aloha Beach Resort's Ali'i Room in Lihu'e.

The center would allow school activities related to environmental education that use the adjacent reservoir and other state lands in the area. Other conservation programs could take part.

"I'm excited about the prospect of developing an education center with activities that would stress environmental awareness and conservation," said department Chairman Peter Young.
