Man charged in harbor case

A 23-year-old Kane'ohe man was charged yesterday with trying to kill a Honolulu police officer.

Daniel Kekona Burgess is accused of trying to drown officer Christopher Fontanilla and assaulting Fontanilla and another police officer, Sharolyn Rodrigues-Wong, on Saturday at 4 Sand Island Access Road. Burgess is charged with attempted first-degree murder and two counts of assaulting a police officer. His bail totals $150,000.

A police report filed today at District Court said that Fontanilla responded to a "suspicious circumstance" call and was attacked by Burgess as he approached him at about 8:45 p.m. Burgess allegedly elbowed Fontanilla in the chin and struck and kicked him, causing the officer to fall into a gulch filled with 12 to 18 inches of water.

Burgess then allegedly grabbed Fontanilla by the neck and held his head under water for 10 to 15 seconds on three different occasions, the document said. While trying to help Fontanilla, Rodrigues-Wong was allegedly struck in the face by Burgess.
