Merchants plan anti-drug rally
Nu'uanu Avenue residents and members of the Nu'uanu Merchants Association will be on the street holding anti-drug signs beginning at 7 a.m. tomorrow as part of their effort to fight crime in the Chinatown neighborhood.
Police have acknowledged that the block of Nu'uanu between Pauahi and Hotel streets, which is inside the Kalihi/Palama/Chinatown Weed & Seed crime-fighting district, is infested with illegal drug use despite the presence of a police substation just a block away.
Drug dealers have created a virtual drive-through service in the area, with specific spots on Nu'uanu, Pauahi and Smith streets where they station themselves and wait for customers to pull up.
The sign-waving and sidewalk demonstration will take place on Nu'uanu Avenue from Pauahi to King streets.
The merchants association's goals include supporting charitable and cultural activities, economic development and keeping the area free of illegal activities.

Subdivision's water cut off
A broken valve at the Board of Water Supply's pumping station in Kunia knocked out water service to about 1,000 residents in Royal Kunia yesterday.
The problem began in the morning when residents reported very low water pressure or none at all. The water board said crews spent most of the day determining the source of the problem and traced it last night to a broken valve.
Two water wagons were circulating through the Royal Kunia subdivision to provide drinking water. The water board also increased the pressure so residents in upper Royal Kunia could receive running water.
Repairs on the valve were expected to be completed by this morning.
