Outrigger event draws final 4 teams

Advertiser Staff

Three of the men's volleyball teams from last week's NCAA final four have accepted invitations to play in next year's Outrigger Invitational in the Stan Sheriff Center.

National champion Brigham Young will join Penn State, Lewis (of Illinois) and host Hawai'i in the round robin, Jan. 6 to 8.

BYU also was the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion. Penn State was the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association champion, and Lewis was the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association winner.

UH coach Mike Wilton said the Outrigger tournament will have earlier starting times. The matches are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

This year, one Outrigger match started at 8:40 p.m. and ended after 11 p.m.

"I didn't like the fact that me and my guys were staying up really late at night with school the next day," Wilton said.
