Galon garners tennis honor

Cleveland State freshman tennis player Sarah Galon, a 2003 graduate of Leilehua from Wai'anae, was selected the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year.

She was also named to the league's first team after posting 17 wins in singles and 16 in doubles, all at the top spot in the lineup.

She is the first Viking player to earn first-team all-league honors.

Men's Tennis

• UCLA junior Chris Lam (homeschooled from Kaimuki) earned all Pac-10 honorable mention honors.

It is the second such honor for Lam, who is currently ranked No. 60 in the nation with a 31-14 overall record and reached the semifinals of the main draw at the Pac-10 Championships two weeks ago.

• Saint Louis (Mo.) junior Ikaika Jobe (Punahou '01 of Wailupe) was named the Billiken Co-Student-Athlete of the Month after posting a 4-2 record at No. 1 singles and helping the team to a 3-3 mark.

Jobe shared April's honor with Billiken golfer Evan Frederick.

Baseball

• Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Claremont, Calif.) senior shortstop Tyler Kimura (Iolani '00 of Honolulu) and sophomore right fielder Kyle Seminara (Punahou '02 of Mililani) were named the team's co-Most Valuable Players.

Senior catcher Chad Sakumoto (Punahou '00 of Honolulu) was presented the William B. Arce award for leadership and dedication to the team and sophomore pitcher Matthew Oda (Punahou '02 of Honolulu) was honored as the team's Most Improved Player.

• Saddleback Community College (Mission Viejo, Calif.) sophomore first baseman Keahi Kapana (Campbell '02 of 'Ewa Beach) was named to the Orange Empire Conference second team.

He batted .377 in conference play, including five home runs and a team-leading 24 RBIs.

Softball

• Taft College (Taft, Calif.) freshman shortstop Lehuanani Yap (Nanakuli '03) was named to the Central Valley Conference first team.

• Notre Dame de Namur (Calif.) is making its first appearance in the NAIA Region II playoffs, with two Hawai'i players contributing: junior pitcher Skylar Tokumine (University High '01 of Honolulu) and junior second baseman Erika Miyahira (Punahou '01 of Honolulu).

Tokumine has a 2.32 ERA with a 3-4 record with 42 strikeouts in 24 appearances.

Miyahira is batting .304 in 39 games. She has 34 hits, 13 doubles and 17 RBIs.

• Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) freshman outfielder Jimo Fujimoto (Iolani of Mililani) earned all-Northwest Conference honorable mention honors.

Fujimoto came on late for the Boxers, getting at least one hit in six of their past seven games to finish as the team batting champion with a .314 average. She is one of two regular starters to play errorless ball on the season.

• Redlands (Redlands, Calif.) sophomore utility player Shelly Joslin (Kamehameha '02 of Waipahu) was named to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second team

She was fourth on the team with a .346 batting average, playing shortstop, second base and third base.

Women's Golf

• Pepperdine junior Rachel Kyono (Kaua'i '01 of Lawai) was named all-West Coast Conference after finishing fourth in the WCC tournament (224).

She also finished 41st in the NCAA West Regional at Stanford this past weekend after shooting 73-80-75—228.

San Francisco junior Mariko Joan Shimozaki (Seabury Hall '01 of Kihei) earned All-WCC honorable mention honors after shooting 231 for a share of eighth place at the WCC Championships.

She shot 76-80-76—232, good for a tie for 51st, in the West Regional.

Also in the West Regional were New Mexico State freshman Lehua Wise (Kaua'i '03 of Lihue), who tied for 51st (83-72-77—232), San Diego State senior Shayna Miyajima (Baldwin '00 of Wailuku), who tied for 66th (77-78-80—235) and Portland State freshman Lisa Kajihara (King Kekaulike '03 of Pukalani), who finished 103rd (86-80-83—249).

Kajihara earned All-Big Sky honors after placing fifth in the Big Sky tournament with 72-78-73—223.

Men's Track and Field

• Cornell junior Ryan Schmidt (Ka'ahumanu Hou '00 of Wailuku) jumped a personal best 23 feet, 10fl inches to win the long jump at the Cornell Outdoor Challenge May 1.

His jump qualified him for the IC4A championships.

Men's Volleyball

• Ball State junior middle blocker Andrew Braley (Kalaheo '00) finished the 2004 volleyball regular season with a .422 hitting average on 183 kills.

Ball State lost to Lewis in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championship.
