By Kyle Sakamoto

McKinley head coach Jesse Victorino emerged from the locker room with the top three buttons of his blue shirt undone, his tie decorated with Warner Brothers cartoon characters untied and his ginger lei wilted. He had to sweat out a victory.

McKinley survived two game-tying 3-point attempts in the final five seconds to hold off Kalaheo, 42-39, in the semifinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Division I basketball tournament last night at McKinley.

In the second game, Kahuku beat Kaiser, 61-49.

McKinley, the East's No. 4 seed, will play East top seed Kahuku at McKinley on Friday at 8 p.m.

McKinley (10-3) didn't hit a field goal in the fourth quarter against Kalaheo (10-3), but hit 9 of 12 free-throw attempts. Bre Carson, who scored 14 points, made eight of those free throws.

McKinley, which led by nine in the first half, took a 42-39 lead after two Carson free throws with 25 seconds remaining.

Kalaheo, the East's No. 2 seed, missed three shots in the paint on the ensuing possession, but the ball was knocked out of bounds by McKinley with 5 seconds left.

The Mustangs missed a 3-pointer from the right wing and, after the ball was knocked out of bounds again by McKinley with 1 second remaining, they missed again from the right baseline as time expired.

"The bottom line is we didn't make enough plays down the stretch to win," Kalaheo head coach Chico Furtado said.

The Tigers led up until Shaina Siliga, who finished with 19 points, hit the Mustangs' only 3-pointer to tie the score at 30 with 2:22 left in the third quarter. But Chantel Yadao hit a 3-pointer 1:10 later to put the Tigers up for good.

"Our girls were kind of tired; I don't know why, it's kind of hot in here," Anae said. "Maybe we had a long wait (between games). It was the natural thing to do because our man wasn't working that well."

Latoya Wily led five Red Raiders in double figures with 14 points.
