2 arrested after gunfire directed at Maui police

WAILUKU, Maui — Two men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after gunfire erupted last night at a gathering of off-duty Maui Police Department officers holding a barbecue at a Kihei park.

Two shots were fired at the officers by one of the men, and one of the officers returned fire, but nobody was hurt, said Lt. Glenn Cuomo of the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.

The incident occurred at about 9 p.m. at the Kalama Beach Park pavilion. A group of perhaps a dozen Kihei District officers and acquaintances were celebrating the transfer of a colleague, Cuomo said, when the two men walked through the group, uttered something "aggressive" toward the officers and took off.

Several minutes later, the men returned to the pavilion. One of them hid behind a tree and fired at the group, he said.

The pair fled in the Makena direction, with the gunman stopping long enough to fire another shot at the officers, he said. That bullet shattered the window on one of the officers’ cars. An officer fired at the gunman, but missed, Cuomo said.

Several hours later, the two were arrested.

Both were being held this morning, and charges have yet to be filed. Cuomo said he expected an attempted murder charge to be filed against one or both of the men.

At the scene, investigators recovered one bullet fired by the suspect’s gun, plus a shell casing belonging to the officer’s firearm, he said.
