Segundo busy turning out tunes

By Wayne Harada

IDOL TALK: Jordan Segundo, Hawai'i's first "American Idol" contestant (from season two) is anything but idle. His solo CD debut still is in the works, but a CD single, coupling "Be the One" (which he wrote) and "So Many Reasons" (a Glenn Medeiros composition), will be out in mid-June. Aaron Kimura is executive producer; Dave Tucciarone is producer. ...

In June, Segundo will perform in California for the first time since making that final 32 "Idol" bid, and he'll promote the CD single, as well as a national CD compilation, "Slow Jam Sessions," being produced in California. The track for this disc will be "So Many Reasons." Harlemm Lee, who won the national "Fame" competition, will be represented, along with Hawai'i artists Tani Lynn and Forté. ...

Besides joining the KHON-2 Morning Show Wednesday mornings to recap the previous Tuesday's competition, Segundo has been on a couple of student tour circuits: for the Adult Friends for Youth, for the Hawai'i Sports Network, for D.A.R.E., here and on the Neighbor Isles. ...

WHEE, THE PEOPLE: By popular demand, Frank DeLima has added a third performance this weekend at McCoy Studio Theatre at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. So laugh along at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow through Sunday. ...

"Camelot," with Tina Shelton and Bryan Bender as Guenevere and King Arthur, opens tonight at Army Community Theatre. Interesting thing about two characters in the fabled Lerner and Loewe musical: Mordred (Dion Donahue) and Merlyn (David Farmer) never appear together (the former appears in Act II and the latter disappears after the second scene). But the two actors have a connection in Cutter TV commercials — with Donahue as the Castaway and Farmer as the Searcher. ...

SIGHT 'EMS: Audy Kimura has performed for Mother's Day at Hy's Steak House for 16 years and has had his share of admirers. When one walked up to the stage and told him, "You've got a great touch on the guitar and I'm really enjoying it," offering a tip in the process, Kimura was understandably appreciative. Then the fan introduced himself as Steve Lukather, Toto guitarist, who was there with his wife, Shawn. They cozied up to Kimura, talking shop during the entertainer's break. "It was very humbling and inspiring to meet such a great player," said Kimura. ...

Kenny Loggins attracted some local celebs to his Waikiki Shell concert last Friday, including singers Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, Loretta Ables Sayre (with hubby-publicist David Sayre), Pauline Wilson (with spouse Dennis McCleese) and Kalapana member Gaylord Holomalia. Amy's brother Eric Gilliom joined Hapa's Barry Flanagan and Nathan Aweau on stage. And that was Wilson and Emme Tomimbang presenting lei to Loggins at the show's conclusion. Not a surprise: Loggins and his musicians wore 'Iolani Sportswear shirts from pal Tomimbang's line. He wanted copies of the TGIF story on his split from wife Julia — and Tomimbang wound up being the courier to get the article to him. ...

Mark Winkler, one of the lyricists for "Naked Boys Singing" (a risque musical now celebrating its fifth anniversary as an off-Broadway hit), was in town for one night and took in Na Leo Pilimehana at Hawai'i Theatre. Winkler and partner Richard Del Belso of Warner Bros. met Burton White, Hawai'i Theatre manager, and house manager Matt James at intermission, offering up a champagne toast to the Hawaiian music. A possible association, perhaps? Winkler created "Too Old for the Chorus," which ran in Los Angeles, with Alvin Ing (the localite of "Flower Drum Song" and "Pacific Overtures" fame), in the cast. It's up for a run at Old Town San Diego. ...

Sweetie Pacarro has "arrived"; for years, folks singing the "Yuban Anthem" during the Michael W. Perry-Larry Price Saturday morning shows (earlier at the Sheraton Waikiki's Hanohano Room, now at John Dominis) got a coffee mug with P&P's likeness on it. No longer; a caricature of Pacarro, the show's producer and on-air personality, now is on the mug. ...

And that's Show Biz. ...
