Mililani, Campbell principals honored

The principals of Mililani Middle School and Campbell High School have been named the 2004 Hawai'i Middle Level and High School Principals of the Year by MetLife Resources and the National Association of Secondary School principals.

Mililani Middle School principal Roger Kim and Campbell principal Gail Awakuni were recognized as outstanding secondary school leaders who demonstrate excellence in leadership, complex problem solving, professional growth and community involvement.

Kim and Awakuni now become candidates for the 2005 National Middle Level and High School Principals of the Year award. Finalists will be announced in August. They will join the other state winners for the National Principals Institute in Washington, D.C., in November. Each finalist receives an award and a $1,500 grant.

The National Principals of the Year receive an award and an additional $5,000 grant. These grants are used to improve education at the recipient's school.


Aliamanu to host event Saturday

A craft fair, bake sale, car wash and yard sale will be featured at Aliamanu Elementary School's Spring Extravaganza on Saturday.

The event also will feature Hawaiian entertainment and games for children.

The extravaganza is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, which is next to the Salt Lake library.


St. Andrew's junior gets perfect score

St. Andrew's Priory junior Ji Young Choi scored a perfect 800 on the verbal portion of the Scholastic Aptitude Test, placing her in the top 1 percent of all students taking the SAT.

Administrators at the school say Choi's accomplishment is particularly remarkable because she learned English as a second language.

About 2 million students take the SAT each year. The national average for the verbal exam is 507.
