THE LEFT LANE
Pregnant moms can get $99 baby portrait

Advertiser Staff

Want to see a picture of your nephew before he's even born? The First Look Sonogram gives more than those scruffy black smudges of the usual ultrasound. A mother at least 18 weeks pregnant can get a sneak peek at Junior, as well as check his heart rate, position and gender.

The $99, 15-minute sessions show distinguishable facial features and come with a videotape, DVD or photograph.

The exhibitor will be among the 150 on hand at the New Baby Expo 2004, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday at the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall. There's also a baby-crawling contest, entertainment and Sunday's "baby shower" for expectant mothers at 1 p.m. Trained massage therapists will offer moms free massages.

Admission is $3.50; children 5 and younger are free. Hotline: 239-BABY (2229) or www.newbabyexpo.com.

Samurai may be in your family tree

OSHIRO
If you're like Alyssa Oshiro, attending the genealogy workshop Finding Your Roots at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i really gets you into your past. The 18-year-old Maryknoll senior discovered that her family stems from a famous samurai clan of great power and influence in 11th-century Japan.

The five-hour workshop is led by Greg Gubler, archivist and professor of the East Asian history at Brigham Young University-Hawai'i, and Bernice K. Hirai.

The next daylong workshop will be at 8 a.m. tomorrow at the center; cost is $50 ($40 members) and includes lunch and materials.

Don't balk: Honolulu a great place to walk

Here's another reason to get your butt off the couch and go out for a stroll: Prevention Magazine and the American Podiatric Medical Association named Honolulu one of the 12 Best Walking Cities in the nation.

Honolulu was among 125 U.S. cities judged on such criteria as air quality, low crime rates, park facilities and mass-transit systems. Honolulu was acknowledged as having fine views for walkers to enjoy — such as the culturally rich downtown area and Waikiki — and bike racks on city buses to encourage people to bike and to walk.

Other cities that made the list are San Francisco, San Diego, Philadelphia; Jersey City, N.J.; New York City; Madison, Wis.; Chicago; St. Louis, Mo.; Washington, D.C.; San Antonio; and El Paso, Texas.
