Avery Cavanah and Kamaile Crowell each scored three goals as top-seeded Punahou beat Kalani, 15-0, yesterday in the opening match of the inaugural HHSAA/Local Motion Girls Water Polo State Championships.
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Buffanblu raced to an 8-0 lead in the first period.
Eight different players scored for Punahou, which advances to today's semifinal round at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on the University of Hawai'i Lower Campus.
The Buffanblu will play the Big Island Interscholastic Federation's top seed Hawai'i Preparatory Academy at 5:45 p.m.
Ka Makani advanced by defeating Roosevelt, 6-5, as Kim Kopra capped a four-goal day by scoring the go-ahead goal with less than four minutes to play.
Kahuku, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion and No. 2 seed, defeated Waiakea, 9-4, to reach tonight's 7 o'clock semifinal against Kamehameha, which beat Kaiser, 17-6.
Stephanie Emery led Kahuku with four goals while Lauren Garrigan scored seven goals and Keala O'Sullivan four to help Kamehameha advance.
