Two teams from Hawai'i won their respective age-group titles at the National Junior Basketball national tournament held in Anaheim, Calif., in April.

The 10-player teams — selected by their peers — were Hawai'i's 10-and-under and 12-and-under teams.

Both went unbeaten.

The 10-under team defeated four California teams, Whittier (65-33), Scripps Ranch (61-19), Laguna Hills (67-29) and Hanford (55-33 in championship).

The 12-under team beat California teams, Hanford (68-34), Anaheim Hills East (64-34), Fairfield (62-35), and a Nevada team, Summerlin (72-50), in the title game.

"They were peaking at just the right time. We played our best basketball (on the trip)," 10-under assistant coach Tucker Nishiyama said.

"Although it was a really good experience for these kids to see and face Mainland competition, I believe what they will remember most about this experience wasÊthe friendships, camaraderie, and times spent together other than basketball."

The players visited Disneyland and California Adventure Park.

Each player was accompanied by a parent.

Nishiyama said the tournament has a rule requiring each player to play at least one complete quarter in the first half.

There is also a "mercy rule," where once a team's lead reaches 25 points, the team's defense has to stay inside the 3-point arc.
