Some 800 fans waited about an hour and 10 minutes from the 1:05 p.m. scheduled start for the cancellation announcement. There was a 2:30 p.m. moratorium because Fresno State's flight was last night. It is a cancellation until it is determined the game can be made up.
The Rainbows (12-11 WAC, 29-19 overall) need to win six of their last seven to achieve their goal of 35 wins. But all seven games are on the road three at Nevada May 21-23, one at Pacific May 25 and three at San Jose State May 28-30.
Hawai'i coach Mike Trapasso said Fresno State coach Mike Batesole can accommodate UH with a make-up at Fresno during the road trip. Trapasso said he will discuss the feasibility with athletic director Herman Frazier.
"The problem being so late in the season, you don't know if you've got time to squeeze it in," Trapasso said.
As for the 35-win goal, Trapasso said: "It's back to just playing our game and not worrying about anything except playing well and trying to win our series and let the chips fall where they may."
The Bulldogs beat the Rainbows the previous two nights.
"We played bad the last two nights," senior Brian Finegan said. "We have nothing to lose at this point. Every game, we have to go out and do our best. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out."
With No. 4 Rice's 11-0 win against Nevada yesterday, the Rainbows and Bulldogs pulled into a three-way tie for second with the Wolf Pack, all at 12-11. They trail Rice by 7 1/2 games.
In the rain, the seven UH seniors Clary Carlsen, Finegan, Josh Green, Creighton Kahoali'i, Jaziel Mendoza, Andrew Sansaver and Chuck Withers were introduced and given plaques, which has an individual action shot of the senior and a team photo. It wasn't an ideal way to send off the senior class.
"It's very tough," Trapasso said. "It's senior day and they're looking forward to it. It's kind of anticlimactic when it ends up being a rainout."
"I wish we could've played," Finegan said. "It would've been that much special. But that's the way it goes."
After the ceremony, the seniors received lei from fans.
"It just shows they're true fans, that they're willing to sit here for an hour and a half through the rain, just for the senior ceremony," Green said.
Added Carlsen: "It's great. It shows that they care. It's nice that they came out, even seeing what the weather was like. We really appreciate it and it makes us feel a lot better for everything we've done here."
After watching senior ceremonies in other sports, Finegan said he looked forward to yesterday.
Camps scheduled: UH is offering three baseball camps for players ages 8 to 18 at Les Murakami Stadium.
A Day Camp will run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 28 to July 1. It will cover all aspects of the game. Cost is $175.
A Pitching/Catching Camp will be held 9 a.m. to noon July 9 to 11. Cost is $115.
A Hitting Camp will be held 1 to 4 p.m. July 9 to 11. Cost is $115.
Players may register for both of the July 9-11 camps for $200.
Camps will be run by UH assistant coaches, as well as by UH players and area high school and college coaches. Rainbows coach Mike Trapasso will not be able to attend because of his selection as pitching coach for USA Baseball.
Lunch is not included for camps that are day-long. Campers must provide appropriate workout clothing and equipment, such as bats for the hitting camp, and gloves and athletic cup supporters. Each camp is limited to 200 participants.
