BYU-Hawai'i wins NCAA D-II women's tennis championship

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's tennis team defeated third-ranked Lynn (Fla.), 5-1, to win the NCAA II National Tournament yesterday in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The title is the third consecutive for the Seasiders and the seventh national championship in the last eight years for the program.

The victory also increased the Seasiders' dual match winning streak to 101 and improved their season record to 35-0. Lynn finished at 24-2.

"The girls were very focused today and are happy to bring another championship back to BYU-Hawai'i," BYUH head coach Dave Porter said. "We knew we were playing a strong team today in Lynn and that they would be very competitive. We were glad to get it done."

The Seasiders took two of the three doubles matches and then secured the title with wins at No. 1, 5 and 6 singles.

Senior Amy Sun and Judy Weng earned an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, and Sun also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.

Adrienn Hegedus and Jing Jing Liu recorded a 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, and Hegedus also posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.

Gurianna Korinihona provided BYUH with the final point of the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.

The Seasiders won NCAA II titles in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004, and NAIA national championships in 1997 and 1998.

BYUH returns to Hawai'i today at 3:30 pm on Delta flight 91.
