UH's Uchima named all-WAC first team in softball

Outfielder Tracie Uchima was named to the all-Western Athletic Conference softball first team and four of her University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine teammates were selected to the second team by vote of the coaches, the conference office announced today.

Uchima, a junior from Torrance, Calif., hit .322, in repeating as an all-WAC selection.

Catcher Denise Dahlberg, first baseman Tyleen Tausaga, second baseman Noelle Izumi and third baseman April Crowell were the second-team selections.

Crowell is the only senior among the UH honorees. Izumi and Dahlberg are juniors and Tausaga is a freshman.

Mitzi Ing, a Fresno State outfielder who graduated from Iolani School, was a second-team pick in the outfield.

Conference champion Fresno State had the player of the year, shortstop Christina Clark, the pitcher of the year, Jamie Southern, and the freshman of the year, catcher Nichole Willis. It was the third year in a row Southern, was named the WAC’s top pitcher.

Jamie Pinkerton of Tulsa was named the coach of the year for the second time in three seasons.
