GABRIEL S.H. LEE, senior vice president of commercial markets at American Savings Bank, was elected chairman of the HAWAII DENTAL SERVICE board of directors. Other elected officers are first vice chairman and assistant secretary GREGORY DUNN, Hawai'i Nature Center executive director; second vice chairman and assistant treasurer DR. RANDALL CISLO; secretary MICHAEL ICHIKAWA, CPA; and treasurer DR. KELVIN ASAHINA.

• Aloha Airlines announced these appointments:

  • Twenty-four-year airline veteran LEE P. STEELE, most recently Polar Air Cargo vice president for flight operations, has been named Aloha senior vice president of operations. He will oversee maintenance, engineering and flight operations, including crew scheduling. His career has included pilot and management positions with several passenger, cargo and charter airlines, including American West Airlines.
  • JACK BUCKINGHAM will lead an expanded safety division as senior vice president, safety and quality assurance. Following a 21-year career as a U.S. Marine Corps pilot and senior ranking officer, he has held key Aloha positions in flight operations, maintenance and engineering, and airworthiness safety and compliance since 1996.
  • Following a stint as assistant vice president, capital markets and portfolio management, with Aviation Capital Group, TIMOTHY T. NG has rejoined Aloha as vice president, fleet planning. He will manage Aloha's fleet, including planning and acquisition of new aircraft. Ng first joined Aloha in 1996, serving as director, development and analysis, and later as staff vice president, planning.

DARCIE SCHARFENSTEIN has been promoted to vice president of Joan Bennet & Associates Inc. public relations. She is a former news reporter, producer and anchor for Clear Channel Communications in Hawai'i. Before joining Joan Bennet, Scharfenstein worked as a reporter for Syracuse New Times and Investment Guild Series on the Mainland, and was a freelance writer for Costa Rica Today.

• Iolani School Headmaster VAL T. IWASHITA has been elected to a three-year term as vice chairman of the National Association of Independent Schools' board of trustees. The association represents nearly 1,200 independent schools nationwide. Iwashita previously served on its board of trustees for six years, and was chairman of its governance committee in 2001. In 1995, he became the first alumnus to serve as Iolani headmaster.

• Bank of Hawaii announced two promotions to vice president:

  • STEVEN W. EDWARDS, most recently assistant vice president and trust officer for retirement plan services, will continue his responsibilities as team leader trust officer in that department. Edwards also has served as vice president of retirement plan sales for Bank of America in Los Angeles.
  • JON D. PEVNA of the Corporate Sourcing Division continues his responsibilities as shared services and operations manager, overseeing the bank's corporate travel program and purchasing administration. Pevna joined Bank of Hawaii as procurement operations manager for corporate sourcing in 2001. Before that, he was vice president, corporate affairs department, Bank of America, San Francisco.
