Intelligence staff moving to Schofield

The headquarters staff of the 500th Military Intelligence Group will move from Zama, Japan, to Schofield Barracks this summer, Army officials announced.

The move will bring about 20 soldiers and their families to Hawai'i, said Mary Markovinovic, a spokeswoman for U.S. Army, Pacific.

She said the headquarters is being moved so the soldiers can better communicate with their "customers" — U.S. Army Pacific and Pacific Command.

The 500th MI group is the lead agent for U.S. Army Pacific intelligence and force protection.

They are tasked with sharing intelligence and data bases with other services, conducting intelligence training, and spotting the intelligence value of information contained in "open" sources of communication, such as newspaper articles, Markovinovic said.

The staff is expected to be in place at Schofield by Sept. 30.
