Pitt's 'Troy' slays competing movies

Advertiser Staff and News Services

It's been a big month for superstar couple Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston: Aniston's "Friends" wrapped up its multibillion-dollar run, and Pitt's Greek epic "Troy" topped the box office over the weekend.

The saga of war and romance featuring hunky Pitt as Achilles brought in $45.6 million over the weekend, according to studio estimates from box-office tracker Nielsen EDI.

Movies aimed at teenagers dominated the top 10, including Lindsay Lohan's high school comedy "Mean Girls" in third place. Others in the top five?

"Van Helsing" at No. 2, "Breakin' All the Rules" at No. 4 and "Man on Fire" at No. 5.

Steppin' out pays off

Health insurer HMSA handed out pedometers and encouragement to all 76 state legislators last month, offering a donation for a school in the district of those who clocked the most steps over four weeks. Top steppers in the 50-and-older category were state Reps. Brian Blundell (the Republican winner), Mike Magaoay and Marilyn Lee. In 49 and under, the top three were Reps. Blake Oshiro, Alex Sonson and Maile Shimabukuro.

Blundell's 555,169 steps earned a $1,500 donation to Lahaina Intermediate School; Oshiro snared a $1,500 donation to 'Aiea High. Others receiving donations: La'ie, Hale'iwa, August Ahrens and Makaha elementary schools, and Mililani Middle School.

Kaua'i's No. 1 tita

Paula Chandler
We just can't resist this item: Paula Chandler was named Miz Kaua'i Tita April 30 during a Hapa Haole Hula May Day event at the Radisson Kaua'i resort, a fund-raiser for the Kaua'i Mokihana Festival and the Hawai'i Hotel Industry Charity Walk.

Organizers jokingly inform us that rumors of a fight among the six contestants were false, though hunks of wig hair left by cross-dressing Tita Blur (Ed Ka'ahea) were discovered after the party.

Women already are signing up to compete next year. Information: (808) 652-4780.
