$1,200 raised for scholarships

The Windward O'ahu American Association of University Women raised more than $1,200 through two recent fund-raising events — the annual garage sale and reserved seating at a Ron Bright-directed production of "Noises Off," at Windward Community College's Paliku Theater. The money will be added to the AAUW Scholarship Fund to advance education, research and self-development for women from the Windward community. Each year AAUW awards academic scholarships to deserving women through a competitive process.

Student wins essay contest

Michael Nagamine of Honolulu has been named state winner for Hawai'i in the 17th annual National Peace Essay Contest, sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace. Nagamine, a student at Hawaii Baptist Academy, will receive a $1,000 college scholarship and will compete for national awards of up to $10,000.

More than 1,000 students from American high schools, U.S. territories and overseas participated in this year's contest. Students conducted research and wrote essays on "Rebuilding Societies after Conflict." The title of Nagamine's essay was "Post-War Reconstruction: Learning from Japan and Yugoslavia."

Nagamine has been invited to represent Hawai'i in a special program for state-level winners in Washington, D.C. Students will meet with senior U.S. government and foreign embassy officials, members of Congress and other experts involved in the making of American foreign policy. They will also assume the roles of diplomats, government officials and members of the international community in a special three-day problem-solving simulation focusing on the conflict in Sudan.
