Junior outfielder Tracie Uchima is a repeat first-team pick. The WAC announced the selections yesterday.
"I don't feel quite I'm deserving of the award," Uchima said in a telephone interview from her California home. "I didn't have a spectacular year. I just did my regular thing, just went out and played. It wasn't like I hit like (last year's WAC Player of the Year) Stacey Porter."
Uchima was tied for third on the team in hitting at .276, led it with 15 sacrifices and was second with 10 steals.
In WAC games, she batted .322 with a team-high .352 on-base percentage.
But Uchima was pleased to hear four teammates got second-team honors. Junior catcher Denise Dahlberg, freshman first baseman Tyleen Tausaga, junior second baseman Noelle Izumi and senior third baseman April Crowell round out UH's selections.
"That was quite impressive," Uchima said. "I'm happy for them."
A player with ties to Hawai'i made the second team. Fresno State outfielder Mitzi Ing is a graduate of Iolani School.
Conference champion Fresno State swept all of the major player awards. Shortstop Christina Clark is Player of the Year, Jamie Southern is the Pitcher of the Year and catcher Nichole Willis is the Freshman of the Year.
Tulsa's Jamie Pinkerton is the Coach of the Year. His team finished second in the WAC.
