McLachlin advances to O'ahu qualifier

Punahou alum Parker McLachlin shot a 68 and finished third yesterday at a U.S. Open Local Qualifier in Indiana.
McLachlin advanced to the next qualifier at the Turtle Bay Links course June 7 on O'ahu.
Two individuals from the O'ahu qualifier will be invited to the U.S. Open on June 17 to 20 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.
BASEBALL
Hilo loses on road: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo baseball team was outslugged by Northern Colorado, 27-16, yesterday in Greeley, Colo.
The Bears collected 21 hits off six Hilo pitchers. Adam Inaba, a 2003 Mililani graduate, got the win for Northern Colorado.
Six Vulcans had multi-hit games, including Tom Henderson's 4 for 5 performance with a home run, two doubles and three runs scored.
Patrick Perry went 3 for 3 with a home run, double and three RBIs for the Bears.
Northern Colorado (27-21) scored 11 runs in the seventh inning.
Marc Caviglia took the loss for Hilo (9-39).
SURFING
Sallas wins longboard event: Hawai'i surfer Kai Sallas won the Bic Challenge USA Qualifying longboard contest on Sunday at Oceanside, Calif.
Sallas earned one of four spots on the United States team for the Bic Longboard World Challenge at Costa Rica in November.
Another Hawai'i surfer, Duane DeSoto, placed second and also earned a spot on the U.S. team. However, DeSoto declined his spot on the team because of a prior commitment.
Barron wins: T.J. Barron of O'ahu's North Shore won the OP Junior Pro Chiba on Sunday at Chiba, Japan.
The contest was open to surfers professional or amateur under the age of 21.
CAMPS
Handy camp: Former University of Hawai'i basketball standout Phil Handy will stage a series of basketball clinics in August at the Manoa Valley Recreation Center.
NBA players Tony Delk and Chucky Atkins also will serve as guest coaches.
The first session (shooting) is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 5 and 6. The session costs $70, and participants receive a 94 Feet of Game T-shirt.
The Aug. 9 to 12 camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Instruction will focus on the different fundamentals needed to become a complete player. The $150 entry fee includes a reversible top, shorts and T-shirt.

Handy helped lead the Rainbows to the 1994 Western Athletic Conference championship and their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in more than 20 years.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the Taylor Delk Sickle Cell Foundation, an organization committed to research and program assistance.
Speed & Quickness: The Hawai'i Speed & Quickness clinic is offering free sessions tomorrow at Farrington High School.
Sessions are 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for ages 7 through 12, and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for those 13 and older. There also is a coaching clinic at 7 p.m.
