Military drama, documentary face off tonight

Advertiser Staff

Two arts events tonight in Honolulu may appeal to those with an interest in military subjects.

"Gunfighter," based on the true story of Army Lt. Col. Ralph Hayles, is a drama about a soldier whose career and life crumble after a friendly-fire incident that kills two American soldiers during the Gulf War in 1991.

Written by Tony Award-winning Mark Medoff, "Gunfighter" will be staged at 7:30 p.m. at Manoa Valley Theatre. Tickets are $25, with discounts for students, seniors and the military. Information: 988-6131.

The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i hosts a free screening of "A Most Unlikely Hero," the documentary on Bruce Yama-shita's experience of racism in the military.

Yamashita, originally from O'ahu, was the target of repeated racial taunts.

The documentary screening is at 6 p.m., followed by a discussion by a panel of scholars about racism, cultural values and individual responsibility. 945-7633.
