THE LEFT LANE
Summer learnin'

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Spring on O'ahu means time to think about the Summer at Manoa schedule of entertainment and free lectures, UH Outreach College classes and the annual Pacific New Media intensive workshops. The catalogs are out now, and you can explore the listings online.

Among the events: Onoe Kikunobu Dance Company's 13th annual concert June 25-27, with masters from East and West; a free lecture July 14 on haku mele, Hawaiian poetry, by kumu hula Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett; a concert Aug. 8 with cellist Mineo Hayashi; and more. Noncredit workshops range from $30 for one-time lectures to $240 for a six-session course in computer-game development. Call 956-5666 to request a catalog, or see www.outreach.hawaii.edu.

Pick your pet peeve

Here's a book to leave on a co-worker's desk with the appropriate passage marked: "Don't You Just Hate That? 738 Annoying Things" by Scott Cohen (Workman, paper, $7.95). There are plenty of things to choose from, but woven throughout the book are bright red pages on which are listed annoying things about specific jobs — like the IT guy who spends an hour on a computer problem, then finally breaks down and calls his boss, who fixes it with two key strokes. Ouch!
