HPU dean wins lifetime award
Helen D. Varner, Hawai'i Pacific University's dean of the College of Communication, has been selected to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association of Business Communicators.
Varner is the second person from the Hawai'i professional chapter of IABC to receive the honor in 34 years since the chapter's founding in 1970. The award recognizes an individual who has served as a role model and has demonstrated leadership, initiative and commitment to the field of communication by supporting the development of the profession and communication professionals.
"Dr. Varner is a dynamic communicator, educator and dean," said Chatt G. Wright, president of HPU. "She is the architect of the respected College of Communication, and fully dedicates herself."
Puja Hudelist, IABC's Hawai'i president, said, "Anyone who has worked with Helen knows she is a force to be reckoned with. She can turn any situation into a learning opportunity for her students, and anyone would be hard-pressed to say 'no' to her because she is always willing to step in and volunteer herself. I've never met anyone so resourceful."
