BYU's Le'i named Mountain West's top softball player

Brigham Young sophomore first baseman Ianeta Le'i, a 2002 graduate of Iolani from Mililani, was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and earned her second consecutive MWC first-team honor.

Lei batted .355 in the regular season with seven home runs, 34 RBIs, 32 runs scored, a slugging percentage of .630 and an on-base percentage of .452.

In MWC play, she was second in slugging percentage (.754) and total bases (43), third in batting average (.386), fourth in home runs (five), and fifth in RBIs (16) and on-base percentage (.453). She also had a .970 fielding percentage.

More Softball

• Fresno State senior outfielder Mitzi Ing (Iolani '00 of 'Aiea) was selected to the Academic All-District VIII University Division Softball Team, as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Ing is majoring in business administration and carries a 3.89 grade point average. She is fourth on the team in batting (.264), runs (20), walks (13) and total bases (57).

She was also selected to the Western Athletic Conference second team.

• Arizona State sophomore Jana Pintz (Kailua '01 of Waimanalo) finished seventh in the javelin with a toss of 144 feet, 10 inches, at the Pac-10 Championships last weekend.

Although the effort was enough to qualify for the NCAA Western Regional, Pintz had already done so in her second meet of the season.

"Everyone who was in the Pac-10s is going to be at the regionals," said Pintz, who said the qualifying mark for the javelin at the Pac-10 Championships was 11 inches longer than the Western Regional mark. "It's the only conference in the nation that is like that."

Women's Volleyball

• Brigham Young senior defensive specialist Uila Crabbe (Kamehameha '00 of Mililani) was named the Cougar Club's Walk-On of the Year.

It is the first year the award has been given out.

Crabbe was a two-time selection to the Mountain West Conference first team and was named the MWC Defensive Specialist of the Year as a sophomore.

Women's Golf

• UCLA senior Bridget Dwyer (Punahou '99 of Kailua) was one of 10 qualifiers at the U.S. Women's Open local qualifying tournament at Corral de Tierra CC (Calif.) Monday.

Dwyer, who shot an even-par 72 and tied for medalist honors, advances to a sectional qualifying event at Knollwood Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., June 15.

Men's Tennis

• UCLA junior Chris Lam (homeschooled from Kaimuki) helped the Bruins advance to the NCAA Round of 16 after winning both of his singles matches at No. 3.

He defeated Wessel Kemp of Oral Roberts, 6-0, 6-1, Saturday in the first round and clinched Sunday's second-round dual matchup after defeating Alexandre Herrera of Pepperdine, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

UCLA won both matches, 4-0.

Lam is ranked No. 60 in the nation in the ITA singles rankings.

Women's Tennis

• Washington senior Erin Hoe (Mililani '00) was named a Pac-10 Conference honorable mention selection after leading the Huskies with 27 regular season singles wins to only eight defeats, and a 20-3 dual record, all at No. 3 singles. Hoe moved into third place on the Washington all-time singles wins list.

The Huskies are in the NCAA Round of 16 after defeating Oregon, 4-3, in the second round, and Fairfield, 4-0, in the first round.

Hoe lost her match at No. 3 singles to Oregon's Courtney Nagle, 6-1, 6-4, in the second round and defeated Andrea Suriano of Fairfield, 6-0, 6-1, in the opening round. She also teamed with Dinka Hadzic to register an 8-1 win over Erin Reeves and Andrea Suriano of Fairfield.

Washington defeated Fairfield, 4-0, in the opening round.

• Loyola Marymount freshman Kimi Kaloi (Kamehameha '03 of Wahiawa) earned all-West Coast Conference first-team honors in doubles with partner Carla Arguelles.

The pair finished the season 10-12 overall but were the Lions' No. 1 doubles team. Arguelles was 13-16 as a doubles player, while Kaloi was 9-15.

• Santa Clara junior Janalle Kaloi (Kamehameha '01 of Wahiawa) was named her team's Most Valuable Player.

Kaloi led the Broncos at the No. 1 position in both singles (13-14 overall) and doubles (10-17 overall), and earned honorable mention all-West Coast Conference recognition.

Women's Wrestling

• Two Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) wrestlers — junior Kristin Fujioka (Castle '01) and freshman Kapua Torres (Kahuku '03) — leave Oregon today for Indianapolis and the U.S. Wrestling Olympic Team Trials, which run Friday through Sunday.

Fujioka and Torres will both wrestle at 105.5 pounds. The champion in each of the four weight classes will qualify for the U.S. team.

Men's Volleyball

• Trinity Christian College (Palos Heights, Ill.) junior setter Kyle Webb (Lutheran '00 of Hawai'i Kai) was named an honorable mention all-Conference of Chicagoland Volleyball Association selection.

He was sixth in the conference in assists per game, averaging 8.26. Trinity Christian finished fourth in the conference (3-7) and 5-16 overall.
