A man was arrested yesterday afternoon and faced an attempted-murder charge after police said he fired several shots at his son.

The victim, in his early 30s, suffered cuts on his neck from shattered glass after gunfire blew out the windows of a vehicle, police said. The man was able to drive himself to Kapi'olani Medical Center at Pali Momi and was transferred to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

The suspect, in his 50s, was arrested in Kalihi and was being held in a police cellblock on suspicion of attempted murder. No charges had been filed last night.

At about 5 p.m. yesterday, police and witnesses said, two men began shooting at each other in the Kanuku Place apartments, across the street from the Zippy's restaurant in Waimalu. One, firing a .22-caliber rifle, chased the other man, who has a 9 mm pistol.

"They were shooting like a cowboy movie," said Sam Samson, a resident of the apartment complex.

Police said neither of the men lived in the complex but referred to it as a "store front" for the men.

Police found .22-caliber shell casings and a 9 mm pistol at the scene.

Paul Beltran said he saw the two men attempting to complete what he suspected was a drug deal shortly before the shooting started. He said he had seen both men around the area before.

Kika Lafaele was in her apartment when she heard what she thought were firecrackers. She went outside and saw a man running with blood on his neck, holding a pistol, screaming for people to call police. "I thought they were playing," she said.

Lafaele said she often saw the men walking around the complex.

Lena Tialavea was playing basketball when she heard the shots and saw a man running toward her. She said he was calling for help before he stopped near a trash can, pulled out a pistol and dumped it.

"There were kids everywhere," she said, surrounded by youngsters. "I just tried to get them out the way."
