Kamehameha vs. Konawaena, 6:15 p.m.
Kalaheo vs. Punahou, 8 p.m.

Iolani shut down Kaiser's inside attack and used an outside attack to advance to the quarterfinals of the HHSAA/Hawaiian Airlines Girls State Basketball Championships.

The Raiders won the opening round game, 50-39, yesterday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Iolani will play Maui Interscholastic League champion and No. 4 seed Baldwin (14-1) today at 4:30 p.m. Kaiser plays McKinley in a consolation round game at 11:15 a.m.

Senior forward Ginger Gravelle said that all the Raiders contributed on defense, helping to guard Kaiser's post duo of 5-foot-11 junior Kilioe Aliifua and 5-8 sophomore Sharde Pratt.

"We were helping each other, containing and communicating," said Gravelle, who finished with seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Led by sophomore guard Hennasea-Sue Tokumura's six points, the Raiders opened with a 12-6 lead after the first quarter.

Junior guard Jaime Nerona scored six points as Kaiser outscored Iolani 12-8 in the second quarter to close to 20-18 at the half.

"We knew if we kept it close we'd have a chance against them," Kaiser coach Lisa Mann said.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Raiders began denying almost all inside attacks in the second half, giving Kaiser some trouble.

"We knew about their two posts, and we were going to try to contain them at least," Iolani coach Glenn Takara. "We knew we couldn't shut them out."

Iolani centers Keilyn Fujioka (6 feet) and Chelsea Wong (5-9), with help from Gravelle (5-10) and sophomore forward Alana Wall (5-10), helped to harrass Aliifua and Pratt, who finished with a team-high 15 points and 16 rebounds.

"They were so big down there, we're used to one, maybe two (big post players)," Mann said. "They did a great job matching up."

And offensively for Iolani, their large presence on the inside helped open up shots on the outside.

"Our game plan offensively was to get the ball in to Keilyn and Ginger," Takara said. "Once they tried to take that away, I told the girls not to worry, their shots would fall."

Tokumura scored a game-high 18 points, including two 3-pointers. The Raiders made all four of their 3-pointers in the second half, including three in the third quarter as they opened to a 33-28 lead.

"I wouldn't say it was big shots, but they were shots that counted at the end," Tokumura said. "We were getting open looks, people were setting each other up."

The Raiders tied their largest lead of the game of 12 points twice, the last coming with just over four minutes to go in the game, 42-30.
