Maui, Kaua'i qualifiers move to Open sectionals

Golfers from Maui and Kaua'i advanced to Hawai'i's inaugural U.S. Open Sectional by winning local qualifiers the past week.
Last weekend at the Ka'anapali North Course, Peter Rice was the Maui medalist with a 4-under-par 68. Brian Sasada and Kellen Watabu also qualified by tying for second at 72.
Tuesday at Po'ipu Bay Resort, amateur TJ Kua (71) and Oahu Country Club head pro Andrew Feldmann (72) advanced.
The alternates from Maui are Cory French (73), Kristopher Kitt (73), Kirk Nelson (75) and Guy Hashiro (75). The Kaua'i alternates are Michael Castillo (73), Glenn Tamagawa (74), Laurent Baker (75) and Radford Sam-Fong (75).
The O'ahu qualifier is today at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course. The 36-hole sectional is at the same course June 7.
The national championship is June 17 to 20 at Shinnecock Hills in New York.
Former Hawai'i state high school champions, and Punahou graduates, Jim Seki and Parker McLachlin qualified on the Mainland Monday. Seki, who played for Stanford, won a three-way playoff to advance out of Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz, Calif., shooting 72. McLachlin was third, with a 68, at the Illini Golf Club in Springfield, Ill.
Leilehua graduate Kevin Warrick is the first alternate out of the Valrico, Fla., qualifier after shooting 71. Warrick was the only amateur to make the cut at the 2002 U.S. Open.
There were a record 8,726 entries accepted for the 2004 Open.
Ko'olau hosting women's event
Ko'olau Golf Club's sixth annual Women in Golf Day will be Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and danish.
The morning will include complimentary instruction on many aspects of the game for women golfers of any skill, in a "friendly, non-intimidating environment." There will also be contests and a raffle, along with a 30 percent discount on Pro Shop purchases.
A $15 donation will be accepted. All money goes to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Ko'olau will also have a Demo Day, featuring Callaway, June 5.
Women's match play entries open
Entry forms are available for the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Match Play Championship. The second of three annual HSWGA majors is June 21 through 25 at Oahu Country Club. Bobbi Kokx is defending champion.
Forms can be obtained on the Web site (hswga.org) or by calling 293-8753. The tournament is open to amateur women belonging to HSWGA or Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association, with a Handicap Index of 14.9 or less.
Forms are also available for the HSWGA Stroke Play Championship, which has been moved to Aug. 2-4 at Ko Olina Golf Club. The tournament is open to amateur women belonging to HSWGA or HSJGA clubs, with a Handicap Index of 9.9 or less.
There will be a HSWGA Mini-tournament at Olomana Golf Links on June 28. It is open to HSWGA members of all handicaps. Format is Stableford.

Sample sale set for May 29
Hawai'i Golf Representatives Association (HGRA) will hold a golf sample sale on May 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be at Washington Middle School's cafeteria at 1633 King Street.
Golf equipment, shoes and accessories, and men's and women's clothing will be on sale.
Free parking is available at the lot off King Street.
U.S. Junior qualifier on Maui
Dunes at Maui Lani will host the local qualifier for the U.S. Junior Championship, June 29 and 30. The national championship will be at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, July 19 to 24.
The United States Golf Association must receive entries by June 2. Entry fee is $20. Forms are available by calling the USGA (908-234-2300) or at usga.org.
The championship is for amateurs age 17 and younger, with a Handicap Index of 6.4 or less. Entrants can select one of approximately 60 qualifying sites.
The national championship field will have 156 players. It opens with two rounds of stroke play, with the low 64 advancing to single-elimination match play.

Deadline for tourney June 2
Entry deadline for the Aloha Section Junior PGA Championship is June 2. State finals will be June 17 and 18. They are limited to fields of 120 participants.
Fields will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis in each division. If there is room in an age group on the deadline date, overflow of entries in other age groups will be added to fill the 120-player field. Ages are as of July 17, 2004.
The 12-under age division qualifier will be at Naniloa Country Club in Hilo. Golfers 8-and-under will play nine holes each day. The 9-10 and 11-12 divisions go 18 holes each day. The 13-15 and 16-17 age divisions play 36 holes at Turtle Bay's Fazio Course.
The top boy and girl will qualify for the national Westfield Junior PGA Championship at the Westfield Companies Country Club in Ohio, July 14 to 17. Round-trip air transportation, meals and lodging are provided. The 29th annual event features the boys and girls champions from each of the PGA of America's 41 sections.
