Officer injured in Round Top confrontation

By Curtis Lum
Advertiser Staff Writer

A Honolulu police officer suffered minor leg injuries when he was dragged a short distance at Round Top Drive by a truck this afternoon, police said.

A shot was fired by a police officer, but there were no reports of anyone being shot.

The incident occurred after the officer and two other officers approached a truck and asked the driver and two passengers to get out, police said.

The driver and a passenger got out of the truck, but another passenger took over the wheel and drove off with the truck, dragging the officer 10 to 15 feet, police Capt. Carlton Nishimura said. The officer suffered scrapes.

A second, plainclothes police officer fired a shot that hit the fleeing truck, police said.

Police were looking for the truck and suspects this afternoon.

Punahou School was locked down with students confined to classrooms as police searched the area for suspects, but the lockdown was lifted a short time later.

Nishimura said plainclothes officers were staking out the Roundtop area after a rash of car break-ins. Officers saw a suspicious-looking pickup and a check of the license plate showed it did not match with the pickup truck. The officers called for a marked patrol car to appraoch the truck. A patrol officer got two of the truck's occupants to get out, but a third drove away, dragging the officer.
