Led by senior guard Kami Kapaku's spectacular all-around performance, the Baldwin High School girls basketball team stunned Iolani, 48-26, yesterday in the HHSAA/Hawaiian Airlines State Championship quarterfinals.

The fourth-seeded Bears, who had won only once in 11 previous quarterfinal appearances, will play No. 1 seed Konawaena at 6:15 in tonight's semifinals at Stan Sheriff Center. Kahuku will play Punahou in the other semifinal at 8.

"When we came here in the preseason, we got our butts kicked," said Kapaku, who had 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. "But throughout the season, the coaches believed in us and then we believed in ourselves, and coming here this time we knew we had a shot."

Baldwin (15-1) made that clear from the start, jumping to a 10-2 lead. The Raiders (11-4) closed to 10-6 after Alana Wall's free throw with 3:35 remaining in the first period, but that was as close as Iolani would get the rest of the game.

The Maui Interscholastic League champion Bears finished the quarter with an 8-2 run, then shut out the Raiders in the second period to take a 28-8 lead at halftime.

Iolani made just 3 of 18 shot in the first half, including 0 for 8 in the second period, and was just 1 for 8 from 3-point range.

"I think we got tired because they made us play defense for a long time," Raiders coach Glenn Takara said. "They were very patient on offense, and if you make one mistake, they'll capitalize on it."

Baldwin maintained its lead in the third quarter, leading 37-19 entering the fourth. In addition to her stats, Kapaku ran the Bears' offense from the point and withstood Iolani's defensive pressure with nifty ball-handling.

"We knew about Kami coming in, and we tried to slow her down," Takara said. "But she's the best we've faced so far."

Kapaku, a two-time Advertiser All-State first-team soccer player, will play soccer for the University of Oregon in the fall but also is considering walking on to the Ducks' basketball team.

"I gotta keep telling people she's not just a great soccer player," Baldwin coach Angel Kalehuawehe said. "She only plays basketball three months out of the year, so if she practiced basketball as much as soccer, she'd be unbelievable. She's already a great player."
