Hayashi tops O'ahu U.S. Open qualifier

Big Island pro Kevin Hayashi fired a 3-under-par 69 yesterday to claim medalist honors at the U.S. Open O'ahu qualifier at the Turtle Bay's Palmer Course.
Joining Hayashi for the June 7 Sectional, also at the Turtle Bay Palmer Course, will be pros Kevin Carll, who shot a 70, and Zack Reeves and Joe Phengsavath, who shot 73s.
Regan Lee (74) is the first alternate, followed by Larry Stubblefield (74), William Coelho (74) and Casey Nakama (74).
The winner of the Sectional will automatically advance to the U.S. Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in South Hampton, N.Y. on June 17-20.
A field of 61 professional and amateur golfers with a handicap index of 1.4 or below competed in yesterday's qualifier.
The four O'ahu qualifiers will be joined by three qualifiers from the Maui sectional, and two from the Kaua'i sectional.

COLLEGE GOLF
UH's Kodama tied for 17th: University of Hawai'i's Matt Kodama shot a 1-under 71 and was tied for 17th place after the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf West Regional at Sunriver, Ore.
Kodama is one of six golfers competing from non-qualifying squads at the regional hosted by the University of Portland at the Sunriver Resort-Crosswater Golf Club.
Ten teams and the top two individuals not from those teams will advance to the NCAA Finals on June 1-4 at the Cascades Golf Course in Hot Springs, Va.
Travis Johnson of UCLA leads the individual scoring with a 6-under 66 in the 54-hole competition.
UCLA leads the team competition with a four-man aggregate of 283, one shot ahead of New Mexico.
There are 27 teams and 140 individual players in the regional.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
UHH loses opener: New York Institute of Technology rallied for a 13-9 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in the opening game of the NCAA Division I Independent Baseball Invitational yesterday in Greeley, Colo.
New York Tech (18-32) trailed 6-1 after five innings, but scored three runs in the sixth, one run in the seventh, two runs in the eighth and six runs in the ninth inning to edge the Vulcans (9-41).
Bryan MacMurray sparked the Bears' six-run ninth, which opened up a 13-7 lead, with a two-run homer.
David Chu hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, helping Hilo close to 13-9.
TENNIS
Spring Sectionals on Maui: Some 400 juniors on 49 teams will play in the USA Team Tennis Spring Sectional Championships this weekend on Maui.
The tournament begins at 8 a.m. tomorrow and Sunday at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch, Kapalua Tennis Garden, Maui Marriott and Lahaina Civic courts.
These teams qualified during league play that involved 800 players ages 7 to 18. Competition was in 11 skill-level divisions.
Barbers Point Slamming Acers qualified six teams for sectionals. Bob's Mob from Kane'ohe and Oahu Club Hotshots have five teams each.
League tennis is designed to "minimize competitive stress and maximize learning opportunities while emphasizing the fun aspect of tennis and team spirit." USA Team Tennis is a nationwide program. This is the 15th year it has been administered by the U.S. Tennis Association/Hawai'i Pacific Section.
