After last night's performance which put the Wildcats into the finals she doesn't have to worry.
Konawaena defeated Baldwin, 53-23, in the semifinals of the HHSAA/Hawaiian Airlines Girls State Basketball Championships at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Top-seeded Konawaena (16-0) plays Kahuku tonight at 8 in the Division I championship game.
"Some of them were nervous, and that was good, because I didn't want them to be too comfortable," Awa said.
The Wildcats' nerves didn't show early on, as they opened the game on an 11-0 run, and used a suffocating man-to-man defense that forced five Baldwin turnovers in the first 4 1/2 minutes.
"We couldn't get shots off, they were playing great defense," Baldwin coach Angel Kalehuawehe said. Baldwin (15-2) is the No. 4 seed and Maui Interscholastic League champion.
The Wildcats led 18-3 after the first quarter.
"Our first quarter is usually our biggest strength," said freshman forward Jazzmin Williams, who scored six of her 10 points in the first quarter.
"It doesn't matter how much (you are leading), we gotta keep the game under control," Williams said. "It helps because we're more patient. We don't have to force anything because we're winning already."
"We were so nervous, it helped to get the jitters out," said senior post Nancy Hoist, who scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Konawaena was also successful early on in shutting down Baldwin senior guard Kami Kapak, who scored 18 points in the quarterfinals.
"After people see Kami play, they key in on her," Kalehuawehe said. "That's our go-to person and our team leader. Shut that down and we're not going to have an offense."
The Wildcats cooled off in the second quarter, as both teams scored six points. It was the same in the third, with Konawaena scoring nine and Baldwin 10, making the score 33-19.
Konawaena outscored Baldwin, 20-4, in the final quarter.
The Wildcats, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champs, are used to dominating their opponents, after averaging 30-plus points per victory this season.
"It's difficult to play with a lead," Hoist said. "You don't want to slack off, you have to be even more fired up, you can't let them get back in the game."
It was the first time two non-O'ahu teams met in the state semifinals, and it will be the first time a Neighbor Island team will be in the finals since Honoka'a in 1997. Waiakea was the last non-O'ahu team to capture the championship, winning consecutive titles in 1985 and 1986.
Konawaena has played in five previous state tournaments and its highest finish was sixth last year.
