Kodama tied for 51st in NCAA golf regional

University of Hawai'i golfer Matt Kodama shot a 5-over 77 yesterday and dropped into a tie for 51st at the NCAA Division I Men's West Regional yesterday at Sunriver (Ore.) Resort-Crosswater Club.

Kodama was at 4-over 148, nine strokes behind four golfers tied for the second-round lead. Kodama was tied for 17th after the first round. BYU's Oscar Alvarez (70 yesterday), UCLA's Travis Johnson (73), Arizona's Henry Liaw (68) and Chris Nallen (68) are tied at 139. The final round is today.

New Mexico leads with a 6-under 570, followed by UCLA (571) and Arizona State, Arizona and BYU (575).

The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on one of the top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Finals, June 1 to 4 at Hot Springs, Va.

WRESTLING

Torres advances: Kahuku's Elizabeth "Kapua" Torres won her preliminary match by decision yesterday at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, but Kane'ohe's Kristen Fujioka was pinned.

Today in Indianapolis, three Hawai'i wrestlers will compete in the 48-kilogram (105-pound) quarterfinals. Torres faces California's Sara Fulp-Allen in one, while Clarissa Chun and Katie Kunimoto are in others.

Moanalua graduate Stephany Lee will compete in a 72-kilogram (158-pound) quarterfinal today against Minnesota's Ali Bernard.

The winners of the two-day preliminary event advance to face the top seed in each weight division tomorrow. That winner qualifies for the Olympics.

BASEBALL

Pace pounds UH-Hilo: Brian Hollrah had three hits and drove in three runs, and Mike Ferrauto hit two solo homers to lead Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.) to a 17-0 victory yesterday over Hawai'i-Hilo in the Division I Independent Invitational at Greeley, Colo.

Pace is 19-30-1, UH-Hilo 9-42.

Patrick Stanley and two relief pitchers held the Vulcans to four hits.

The Vulcans complete their season today against Northern Colorado.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Wong, Scott advance: Punahou graduates Sean Scott and Kevin Wong yesterday advanced with their partners to the main draw of the $180,000 SWATCH-FIVB Beach World Tour event in Lianyungang, China.

Scott is playing with Todd Rogers while Wong's partner is Eric Fonoimoana.

Dain Blanton and Jeff Nygaard, the top-ranked team from the United States on the Olympic qualifying list points, also reached today's main draw.

Scott and Rogers, seeded 10th, defeated teams from France and Germany to advance.

Wong and Fonoimoana, seeded 17th, play an elimination match today against ninth-seeded Linyin Xu and Qiang Xu of China.
