• "INVESTING IN AN ELECTION YEAR, a video-network discussion sponsored by Edward Jones financial firm on the upcoming presidential election and its impact on the economy, is scheduled from 12:30 p.m. June 8 in the firm's offices in Suite 1080 at 1001 Bishop St. Reservations: 533-4980.

• Hawai'i's popularity as an "exotic locale" to Hollywood in the wake of foreign security uncertainties, and questions over whether that is enough to nurture the developing local film industry, will be discussed at a luncheon meeting Thursday of the Hawaii Venture Capital Association.

The speakers will be Judy Drosd, chief of the Arts, Film and Entertainment Division, state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism; and Donne Dawson, director of the Hawai'i Film Office.

• The MINORITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF HONOLULU offers free weekly orientation sessions to minority business-owners and prospective entrepreneurs. The sessions, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays in the center's offices in Suite 2506 of the Executive Center, 1088 Bishop St., offer advice on business startups, marketing plans, loans, employee handbooks and access to capital. • A free "COMPUTER BOOT CAMP" is offered 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to small-business owners who want to use computer technology to improve and expand operations.

It is sponsored by the Small Business Resource Center, in partnership with the Small Business Administration, the city Office of Economic Development, Hawai'i Small Business Development Center Network, Hawai'i Women's Business Center and SCORE.

• Federal regulations stipulating that workers employed in construction jobs at public buildings or public works be paid no less than the locally prevailing wages and fringe benefits will be explored at a three-day seminar next month, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor. The "Compliance Assistance Workshop," on the federal guidelines imposed by the Davis-Bacon and Service Contract acts, will be held June 1 to 3 at the East-West Center.
