THE LEFT LANE
Teen sex quiz online

Advertiser Staff and News Services

This month, teens across the Islands are expected to go online to participate in a local campaign designed to prevent teen pregnancy.

Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children modeled the Teen Intervention Program after a national campaign; it includes a quiz encouraging teens to think before having sex, while providing information on the consequences of sexual choices.

Access the quiz at www.teenlinehawaii.org.

Scholarship scams

Each year scholarship scams bilk Americans out of more than $25 million. Gen Tanabe, the Hawai'i-born co-author of "1001 Ways To Pay For College" and "Money-Winning Scholarship Essays and Interviews," and his wife, Kelly, offer these tips for spotting scholarship scams:

  • Beware offers that say, "for a fee, we will find hidden, unclaimed scholarships." If you pay for this service, you will receive a generic list of scholarships that are anything but hidden or a list of those with such specific criteria almost nobody can qualify to apply.
  • Beware those promising a big scholarship if you pay a tiny fee. You'll get a letter that says, "Sorry but you are not a winner." Real scholarships don't require a fee and legitimate scholarships give money away, not take it.
  • Beware those that guarantee you'll win at least one scholarship. There is no such thing. Scholarships are competitive, and not every applicant will win.

Kamehameha rewrite

Activity is still burbling on Columbia Pictures' King Kamehameha project, now tentatively titled "Battle for Paradise."

Variety reports that screenwriter Karen Essex (who has adapted the story of Cleopatra for a film now in development at Warner Bros.) is rewriting the original script from Greg Poirier ("Runaway Jury").

And yes, according to Variety, the Rock is still the likely star.
