Science awards presented

The Conservation Council of Hawai'i has given awards to students at the Hawai'i Science and Engineering Fair on O'ahu for the outstanding work of students focusing on species conservation.

Junior Display Category: Conrad Sanborn, Kealakehe Intermediate School, for "Avian Malaria and How it Affects Hawai'i's Birds," and Megan McGill of Sunset Beach Elementary School for "Feral Cat Population in Hawai'i."

Junior Research Category: Cameron Yasukawa of Waiakea Intermediate School for "Can a Sodium Chloride Solution Be Used as an Effective, Non-Toxic and Inexpensive Herbicide as Compared to Glyphosate in the Eradication of Verbascum thapsus?"

Senior Research Category: Andrew Knutson of Kamehameha for "RAPD Analysis of Population Diversity of Hibiscus arnotianus. Year 2: Comparisons Between Geographically Isolated Populations."


Island students take part in lab

Five Island students were selected from a pool of more than 150 candidates nationwide to participate in the recent Brown University Environmental Leadership Lab on the Big Island.

They are 12th-grader Iris Markham of Ke Ana La'ahana Public Charter School; Noelani Penney, a 10th-grader at Honoka'a High School; home-schooled 10th-grader Jessica Neel; home-schooled 11th-grader Elena Graham; and home-schooled 10th-grader Sydney Penney.

The leadership laboratory is a collaborative effort spearheaded by Brown University and the Kohala Center.

The Kohala Center, an independent academic center in Waimea, oversees the program.

The 10-day program took participants to Volcano to study geology, to South Kona to study forest ecology and native plants, and to the Kohala Coast to study marine science.


HPU alumni recognized

Hawai'i Pacific University recently recognized three outstanding alumni for their achievements.

They are: Sen. J. Kalani English, who received the Professional Achievement Award recognizing the distinguished career accomplishments of graduates; Iven Sugai, who received the Alumni Services Award in recognition of outstanding service to the community and the university; and Blagovets Stephanov, who received the Young Alumni Award for being an outstanding role model for future alumni.


Hawai'i student gets scholarship

Julia M. Wong, daughter of Ronald and Ruth Wong of Honolulu, has been awarded a Trustees Scholarship to attend Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky. Wong is a senior at Hawaii Baptist Academy.
