Motorcyclist identified

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police have identified a 51-year-old motorcyclist who was killed Saturday in a crash on Mamalahoa Highway near Miloli'i in South Kona.

Rodger Vezina, 51, of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates in Ka'u crashed shortly before 8:30 p.m., police said

Vezina had been riding a 2003 Harley Davidson south on the highway when he ran off the road, police said. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police have not determined whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash and have ordered an autopsy.

Man drowns on Big Island

A 28-year-old man died yesterday afternoon after he was swept out to sea at a Kalapana fishing spot on the Big Island.

The man had climbed down to the shoreline to gaff a fish at the Sledge Hammer fishing area, a fire official said.

Two waves knocked him man off his feet, but he was able to hang onto a rope.

But a third wave hit the man and took him out to sea shortly before 5 p.m. The Fire Department was called, but by the time they retrieved the man he was dead.
