N.C. university honors Dobelle

University of Hawai'i president Evan Dobelle was one of four people to receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of North Carolina at Asheville recently.

Dobelle was recognized for his work as an advocate for the liberal arts, a supporter of research and technology and a promoter of public partnerships to stimulate economic development.


Nurse named associate dean

Patricia Lange-Otsuka, associate professor of nursing at Hawai'i Pacific University, was appointed HPU associate dean of nursing for administration effective July 12.

In addition to teaching, Lange-Otsuka is a graduate program chairwoman in the school of nursing and serves as an item writer for the National Council Licensure Examination. For the past three years, she has been chairwoman of the HPU Faculty Assembly.

Licensed as an advanced practice registered nurse, Lange-Otsuka is certified as a community health clinical nurse specialist. Her nursing career includes work as a consultant, nursing supervisor and primary care nurse.


20 teens to study in China

The Pacific and Asian Affairs Council awarded 20 local public high school students a study tour scholarship to China this summer. Each scholarship is valued at more than $3,000 and covers all expenses. Scholarships were funded by the Freeman Foundation.

Participants in the tour are: Michelle Bagoyo of Radford High, Runae Bedonie of Kalaheo High, Elena Brown, Be Thi Ho, Mercedes Tappe and Jerrold Wu of Education Laboratory School (formerly UH Lab School), Jakob Bunker of Kaiser High, Krystle Corpuz and Bradley Rasmussen of Kahuku High, Kristal Ann Daligcon of Waimea High, Ann Inouye of Waiakea High, Katasha Kuhaulua of Wai'anae High, Chris Lee and Elizabeth Songvilai of Kalani High, Janelle Marquez and Jasmine Shimabukuro of Farrington High, Pamela Mizuno of Kapolei High, Jessica Nagasako of Lahainaluna High, Israel Silva of Kailua High and Tracy Yeung of McKinley High.


Two at UH win scholarships

Two University of Hawai'i at Manoa students have been designated to receive Crown Prince Akihito Scholarships. They are Jessica Busch, Ph.D. candidate in the department of anthropology, and Jane Yamashiro, Ph.D. candidate in the department of sociology.
