Man who died in crash ID’d

A man who died Monday after crashing his 1990 Nissan multi-purpose vehicle on Old Mamalahoa Highway has been identified by Big Island police as Craig Zaltosky, 51, of Holualoa, North Kona.

Police said the vehicle skidded off the roadway and hit a guardrail. Police were called at 7:59 p.m.

Zaltosky died at Kona Community Hospital.

His death was the 19th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with 12 at this time in 2003.

Man indicted in slaying hunted

Honolulu police want to find a 24-year-old man who was indicted May 5 on second-degree murder charges in connection with the beating death of Mikiala Kahalewai on April 19.

John Wilfred Penitani has not been seen since he left the scene of the 1 a.m. beating in front of the Pachiko Karaoke club on Kona Street and may have fled to either American Samoa or Concord, Calif., police said.

Another man, 23-year-old Ulutunu Faumuina Jr., was charged on April 20 with murder in Kahalewai’s death. Penitani and Faumuina are the only suspects in the case, according to homicide investigators.

Kalihi bank branch robbed

American Savings Bank’s Kalihi branch was robbed today of an undisclosed amount of cash by a man who used a note stating he had a weapon, although none was seen. The robbery at 1851 North King Street was reported to police at 10:06 a.m.
