Schools collecting Memorial Day lei

Public school students throughout the state are taking time out to sew and collect up to 50,000 lei for Memorial Day observances this weekend. Several schools are inviting the public to donate lei or participate in lei-sewing parties.

At Niu Valley Middle School, the eighth-grade Pu'uwai team has invited the Niu Valley Community Association to help sew lei this afternoon. Cafeteria workers will whip up refreshments, and the custodial staff will supply some of the flowers for the lei. Anyone interested in helping out can call Amy Ka'awaloa at 377-2440.

On Schofield Barracks, the A-Plus after-school program at Solomon Elementary is collecting plumeria and having a lei-making party tomorrow. Those who want to participate should call Sherris Richards at 624-9513 or Patty Bengochea at 624-9500.

Mililani Uka Elementary will serve as a lei drop-off location on Friday. The student council will collect lei during an awards assembly at 8:30 a.m. For information, call Vikki Wong Webb at 627-7382.

At Palolo Elementary, students and parents are making ti leaf lei, and other types of lei will be collected at the campus cafeteria at 8:30 a.m. Friday. For information, call Lily Masuda at 733-4700.

On the Big Island, Kea'au Elementary will make floral bouquets and sew lei today and all students are asked to bring a lei to school tomorrow. For information, call Sally Deryke at 982-4210.

At Waiakea Intermediate, each student and faculty member is asked to bring a lei to home-room classes tomorrow. Call Barbara Austen at 981-7231 for information.

Kaua'i High School's Key Club will collect lei from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. in front of the library. For information, call club adviser Betsy Sakoda or student body president Sheila Nakayama at 274-3160, ext. 127.
