Bon voyage, Hokule'a
As the Hawaiian voyaging canoe Hokule'a makes its first landfalls at the beginning of its latest educational and cultural voyage, we take the opportunity to wish its crew fair winds.
With its satellite communications capacity, Hokule'a's crew of 12 is keeping contact with more than 60 classrooms across the state. There's a unique and fascinating mix of high-tech abilities on this traditional craft piloted with ancient wayfaring techniques.
The mission to spread awareness of what the state's ecosystems once may have been like, and to encourage protection of the Hawaiian environment, is indeed worthy of success.
Godspeed.
