Kamehameha names Maui football coach
Advertiser Staff
Kamehameha-Maui has promoted Leo Delatori to head coach for the school's first varsity football team, Maui campus athletic director Kurt Ginoza said.
Delatori, a counselor at the school, was the junior varsity coach last season. Billy Plunkett, who also was on the JV staff last year, will succeed Delatori as the JV head coach.
Delatori also has coached at Baldwin and Lahainaluna, Ginoza said.
Kamehameha's entrance to varsity football will bring the Maui Interscholastic League to six teams for the first time since 2000, when Ka'ahumanu Hou made its last appearance in varsity football. The school will welcome its first junior class this fall. The varsity will be made up of mostly juniors and sophomores.
Meanwhile, Kamehameha-Hawai'i has yet to name a varsity football coach, Big Island campus athletic director Bob Wagner said. He said hopes to have one named by July 1.
Like the Maui campus, the Big Island campus will enter varsity competition for the first time this fall, increasing the Big Island Interscholastic Federation to 10 teams. Kamehameha-Hawai'i also will have its first junior class this fall.
SURFING
3 advance in Fiji: Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Fred Patacchia Jr. won first-round heats on the opening day of the Quiksilver Pro yesterday in 5-foot waves at Cloudbreak, Fiji.
Andy Irons, the two-time defending world champion and current No. 1-ranked surfer, received a near-perfect score of 9.5 in his first-round win.
Pattachia qualified for the contest through the trials round, and upset No. 2-ranked Taj Burrow of Australia yesterday.
As first-round winners, the Irons brothers and Patacchia advanced directly to the third round.
Fellow Hawai'i surfers Sunny Garcia and Kalani Robb placed second in their respective heats yesterday, and will have to surf in the second round.
