Lei sought for Memorial Day

The Waikiki Community Center is asking residents to drop off fresh flowers or ti leaves between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. tomorrow as part of the "Sew a lei for Memorial Day" program.

The flowers will be used to make lei that will be placed at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl or the Veterans Cemetery in Kane'ohe.

Plumeria, stephanotis and crown flowers are needed, as are volunteers to help make the lei. Completed lei, 22 inches long before being tied, can also be dropped off.

Noelani honored for TV project

A television public-service announcement by students from Noelani Elementary School in Manoa has been recognized by the city of Honolulu and the state Department of Education.

The TV announcement, called "Save the Stream," was a project for the Student Watershed Symposium. Four public schools competed in the event this month at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

The students learned about the impact of polluted run-off on watersheds and the ocean.

Church offers food, fireworks

The public is invited to a free dinner, entertainment and fireworks celebration from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Lighthouse Outreach Center, 94-230 Leokane St. in Waipahu.

The purpose of the celebration is to recognize the fact that the Lighthouse congregation has taken ownership of the $1.7 million center after only six years in the community. "This is just our way of thanking God and giving something back to the community," said the Rev. Joe Hunkin, pastor.
