Hayashi to defend Kona title — 5 years later

It has been five years, but Kevin Hayashi will defend his title in the Kona Open Saturday and Sunday at the Kona Country Club Ocean Course.

The 36-hole event returns to the local golf calendar for the first time since Hayashi won the last time it was held in 1999.

Other pros in the field for the $12,000 tournament include Beau Yokomoto, John Lynch, Joe Phengsavath and brothers Regan and Reynold Lee.

GOLF SHORTS

President's Cup: Entries are being accepted for the Pearl President's Cup, to be played June 26 and 27 at Pearl Country Club. Play begins at 12:30 p.m. each day.

The 36-hole stroke play event has A (5-9 handicap), B (10-14), C (15-plus) and Senior (50 years and older) flights.

Entry deadline is June 20. For information, call Pearl Country Club (487-3802).

Westfield deadline: Wednesday is the deadline for the Westfield Junior PGA Aloha Championship, June 17 to 18.

The age 12-and-under tournament is at the Naniloa Country Club. The 13-15 and 16-17 divisions will be played at Turtle Bay Resort's Fazio Course.

Winners at Turtle Bay are eligible for the Westfield Junior PGA Championship, July 14 to 17 at Westfield Group Country Club in Westfield Center, Ohio.
