UH sailors eighth at nationals

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i was in eighth place yesterday after the first day of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association North American Women's Championships at Cascade Locks, Ore.

The Rainbows scored a total of 87 points — 49 in six A division races, 38 in four B division races — to trail leader Navy (42) by 45 points. Yale is second in the 18-school field with 52 points.

Racing on the Columbia River was held in rain and 8- 10-knot winds. In the fourth race of B division, a squall brought rain and winds of 15 to 20 knots. Ten boats capsized, including the Hawai'i crew of Renee DeCurtis, Barbara Clausen and Sarah Reed.

Both Hawai'i boats placed first in the third races of the day, temporarily putting the Rainbows in third place. Hawai'i tumbled to eighth after the fourth races, when the A crew (Jennifer Warnock, Shandy Buckley, Cassandra Harris, Blaire Ladd) finished 14th and the B crew did not finish.

The second of three days of sailing will be held today.

WATER POLO

UH's Novick third-team All-American: University of Hawai'i junior Beth Novick has been named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association All-America third team.

Novick, of Evergreen Park, Ill., led the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with 64 goals. She is fourth on UH's career goal list with 116.

USC's Moriah Van Norman was the association's Player of the Year.

BASEBALL

UHH's Chu honored: University of Hawai'i-Hilo sophomore David Chu was chosen to the Division I Independent Baseball Tournament all-tournament and all-academic teams.

Chu, an outfielder, batted .429 (6 for 14) during the three-day tournament last week. He scored two runs, drove in three and had a .714 slugging percentage, bolstered by a double and home run.

The criminal justice major has a 3.08 grade point average.

SURFING

Postponement in Fiji: Competition in the Quicksilver Pro at Cloudbreak, Fiji, yesterday was postponed. Hawai'i's Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Fred Patacchia Jr. have advanced to the third round.
