Hawai'i’s hope for second place in the Western Athletic Conference ended after falling to San Jose State, 8-0, this morning at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif. The Rainbows (13-14, 31-22) need to win the next two games of the series to finish with an above .500 record in conference and finish at least in third place.
Whichever team wins the Nevada (14-13) at Fresno State (14-12) series will clinch second place.
Matt Durkin (8-5) allowed three hits and five walks with eight strikeouts for his second complete game of the season for the Spartans (9-19, 21-31-1).
For UH, Ricky Bauer (8-4) went six innings, charged with seven runs, three earned, on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Steven Wright pitched the final two innings.
A four-run fourth inning in which all of the runs were unearned against Bauer because of two errors hurt the Rainbows.
