Tonight's Must-See
"The Virgin Suicides" (2000), 6 p.m., Lifetime. When this movie opened, reviewers offered guarded praise. They talked about a gifted, first-time writer-director (Sofia Coppola), handling a talented young cast. Coppola has gone on to success in "Lost in Translation." Now might be a good time to try her first film. Adapted from Jeffrey Eugenides' novel, it's a downbeat look at four teens and the guys who obsess on them. The younger cast members include Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, Hayden Christensen and Hanna Hall. Grown-ups include James Woods, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito.
"Life With Bonnie," 8:30 p.m., ABC. When ABC announced its fall schedule, it surprised fans by dumping this erratic but clever show. We'll have to spend the summer catching reruns before it's gone. Tonight, Bonnie (Bonnie Hunt) hears her husband coo about someone, or some thing, in a dream.
Of Note
"The Lion in Winter," 5 p.m., Showtime. If you missed Sunday's premiere, catch the film now. It's a richly crafted tale of palace intrigue. In the 1968 movie, Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn were excellent as the strident King Henry II and his incarcerated wife, Eleanor. Patrick Stewart and Glenn Close, however, are even better. They capture the power and intensity of playwright James Goldman's story.
"Joan of Arcadia," 7 p.m., CBS. Joan has a dream, filled with images of Adam and of Rocky.
"The George Lopez Show,"
7 p.m., ABC. This oft-funny show strains believability in this episode, the first half of a two-parter. The U.S. president is visiting the plane factory. George is in charge, but his daughter booms in to protest.
"Getting Even With Dad" (1994), 7 p.m., Pax TV. Macaulay Culkin plays an 11-year-old kid who visits his dad (Ted Danson), while the guy's busy with a coin-theft scheme. Complications follow.
"Hope & Faith," 8 p.m., ABC. The sisters pretend to date guys so they'll help fix an old sports car.
