Haydn's Mass at Chaminade

Mezzo-soprano Milagro Vargas, who teaches at the University of Oregon School of Music, and Leslie "Buz" Tennent, bass, will perform in the Hawai'i Vocal Masterworks Festival's presentation of Haydn's "Mass in Time of War" at 7:30 p.m. June 19 and at 4 p.m. June 20 in the Mystical Rose Oratory of Chaminade University.

Other singers include sopranos Cheryl Bartlett and Rosanna Perch, and tenor Wayne "Doc" Wilson, as well as the Hawai'i Vocal Arts Ensemble. Timothy Carney conducts the program, which also willinclude the Brahms Viola Songs, selected lieder and Mozart's motet, "Ave verum corpus" for chorus.

Tickets: $20 ($35 preferred seating; $15 seniors and military, $5 students).

Baha'i Center music June 18

Singer/songwriter Susan Lewis Wright will present a free musical program, "Art and Spirituality," at 7:30 p.m. June 18 at the Honolulu Baha'i Center, 2165 10th Avenue in Palolo.

The Littleton, Colo.-based musician also recently wrote "Bird — Soul in Flight," a book of comfort for those in mourning.

'Nonkilling' talk set Wednesday

Interfaith Open Table Hawai'i will hear Glenn D. Paige, a retired political science professor and president of the nonprofit Center for Global Nonviolence, discuss "Is a Nonkilling Society Possible?" at its monthly meeting.

Paige has taught at Seoul National University, Princeton University and the University of Hawai'i, where he introduced undergraduate courses and graduate seminars on political leadership and nonviolent political alternatives. He is the author of "Nonkilling Global Political Science."

Also on the agenda is Darlene Rodriques, discussing "Helping to Break the Silence: What You Should Know to Help Battered Immigrants." Rodriques is the immigrant services coordinator for the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline.

The interfaith group meets the first Wednesday of every month. The June meeting will be held at 7 a.m. Wednesday at the UCC Conference Center Board Room, 15 Craigside Place.
